Shielding the Extremely Vulnerable

The UK government has issued guidance on shielding and protecting people defined on medical grounds as “extremely vulnerable” due to COVID-19.

Identifying and contacting all the patients who fall into this category is a complex activity, as they are cared for in different ways by multiple organisations.

An initial piece of work was done under guidance from NHS Digital on 20 March 2020, and codes were added to patient records of all those who were identified under this initial exercise.

We are aware that there are a number of patients who meet the “extremely vulnerable” criteria but who have not yet had their letter.

A lot of work is going on to complete the work of contacting all those who are eligible for the additional support on offer.
